Just another character study for a comic I was thinking about and decided not to do it. This guy was just one of the characters and I can't even remember what it was supposed to be about. I was writing it all because I thought it would be funny if there was a group of intergalactic smugglers who work together and they get a new guy. So they're introducing him around and they come to Yuri who's from Russia and they get the new guy to ask Yuri what he's going to do with all his money and Yuri (very excited that someone wants to listen to his dream) says, "Some day I will buy my own country and it will be free and prosperous and I will name it after me (some snickering from the others) and I will call it Yuri-nation!" And the snickers burst into laughter and that was the whole driving force behind this comic. This character wasn't Yuri. I'll scan him later.

Minnow

It's the character study of Minnow, the main character in a brand new fairy tale I've been thinking about and writing a bit about for the last...4 years now? I have too many stories in my head and not enough time! One of them has to be good.

I keep beginning comics all based around the premise of being in a room that's a trap with a lowering spiky ceiling and everything just because I think it would be hillarious for one of the guys in it to tell the woman not to worry because if the ceiling gets too low he'll brace it with his body. It makes me laugh. So here's the beginning of one story I gave up on. It's the typical military girl and roguish guy marry on accident and get trapped in the lobby of his secret lair only to set off the alarm and so the ceiling is going to crush them because he forgot the password. I know, lame.

Vampires are the undead, so if they cut themselves they can't heal. I submit that vampires become desicated corpses and so they spread tales that they are young and sexy forever and thus lure morons to their deaths and slow rotting nights. Here is my interpretation of one such idiot who is beginning to show her emaciation. No wonder they stay in the dark! I also think that if a vampire drank as much blood as they do in movies they'd be more like ticks and should pop when stabbed with stakes, but that is another project I'm working on.

I have the first issue all roughed out but it's slow going when you have to work at a real job...or two. I better finish it soon or I can't justify buying season one and two of She-ra...for reference of course.

All fairy tales contain unbalanced characters, a step-mother who has to wear red hot iron shoes as punishment, a girl who gets her feet cut off cause she bought red shoes, mute wives suspected of cannibalism, you know what I'm talking about but I'm sure the first fairy tale that came to your mind as the most unbalanced was the tale of Olga Von Kurtzenberger in the story of "Der Cinder Frauline" by Hans Christian Grimm. Who can forget the introduction..."Once upon a time there lived a very poor girl who was horribly abused by her step-mother and any other step-relations she may have had. Her father had no interest in her and therefore let her suffer perhaps because his new wife was so hot. Poor Olga Von Kurtzenberger was made to sleep on the logs in the fireplace which earned her the name of 'Der Cinder Frauline' and a ruptured disc of her 7th vertebrae. But one day her horrid luck and parental neglect would came to an end for while Olga was pulling weeds in the kitchen garden what should she find but a mystical shrunken head! It would grant her every wish with its magical glowing...." But of course you all know this story already! So this is my unbalanced submission for this week. Enjoy folks!

I was reading Sherlock Holmes and I had this idea for a graphic novel about a vampire family during the victorian era. I have some stuff written but I need to get the rest down. It's pretty dark and dry humor. Of course I think it's very funny. Today I drew part of the family. The story starts, "There once was a boy with very sharp teeth." I had some stuff scanned and I think I posted it on a different blog but I redrew the characters and I like them much better now. The father doesn't have hands yet because I think I'll move his arms. I know the pose of his legs isn't physically possible either.

I had a great traveling experience. Actually I hated my 9 hour flight because the person next to me always slept the whole time and I couldn't get out so my legs swelled up. Not to mention the charming security staff at the SLC airport. Talk about crabby! I sketched the mean lady who didn't like me waiting for a woman in a wheel chair, the guy who told me what comet was on my shirt, and my super cool airplane. Never get a seat behind the engines if you can possibly avoid it for the flights across the ocean. Plus, window seats aren't so great because you have to keep the window closed almost the whole time.

Another landscape but in watercolor this time. I still have to fix the two mushy spots but it only took about an hour so it's not too bad. I haven't painted with watercolor in a long time too. It was fun. The colors are better in real life.

This is the first oil landscape painting I've done in at least a year...probably two or more I don't really remember. Actually it was the first oil painting period that I've done in I don't know how long. It turned out okay. I did it in about 2 1/2 to 3 hours. I think the clouds turned out okay. I'm trying to paint things to sell to the tourists. heh heh.

My brother wrote a poem entitled "Garbageheapatorium" and we decided to try to get it published as a children's book so we're sending out some stuff to our first publisher this week. This is the sketch of the family and the room that we're including in the packet. I don't quite have the room finished but I'll probably have that done today and I'll post it later. We're trying Dial publishers first. They take unsolicited submissions from unknowns so that's our first try. I've been collecting rejection letters lately and I hope to have a respectable pile of them soon.

Here's what I have so far Josh. I'm working on it in my spare time. I wanted to finish it for Illustration Friday but I keep getting sidetracked with trying to make money. I think I need to try to get an agent or something. I'm terrible at this whole freelance job finding thing. I think this guy is going to be a vampire fighter or something. I'm not sure. I was thinking of dead body silhouettes at his feet or maybe just faint gravestones in the mist? I was thinking some sort of religious clergy warrior guy like the Knights Templar or something. We'll see how it turns out.

Batman is too big to scan and my camera is acting funny so I can't put him up yet. I think I'll rework this one and maybe actually get some reference...somehow.

I was going through my old sketches and I found this guy. I can't remember the story I made up about him but I do remember that the hospital staff were all too polite to mention his most obvious attribute. Maybe he got into an accident and the miracle of medicine replaced his head with a balloon, the heroic efforts of the surgeons inspired him to grow up and become the greatest surgeon of all time. Or something like that. The real question is...was that his name to begin with or is it just a nickname?

Snow Queen

This is a gouache and ink painting of the Snow Queen from "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe". I did it a while ago and I think I will redo it soon or just touch it up a bit. I'll post the new one soon. I keep all my old drawings even if they really stink in binders in case I want to steal an old idea. I did a drawing of a creepy looking woman a long time ago and I decided she should be redone as the Snow Queen. That is actually the first time I've used any of those drawings in all those binders....maybe I should rethink my system. Nah.

This is a painting from the last page of my book "Sven the Mexican" that I made in Advanced Illustration class with Dan Burr. Sven has finally found where he belongs. It is done in gouache and ink. I plan on redoing it digitally so it fits with the ocean I painted. I still need to paint his boat in that one.

Our assignment in Advanced Illustration was to paint the same drawing twice and to use saturation on one and value in the other to emphasize different parts of the painting and to learn how you can change the meaning of a painting by changing one or the other. That was a long sentence, hope you got though it okay.

Vampire Hunter

So I decided it would be funny if a confident vampire hunter waits until the last second to turn and stab the vampire (as they usually do) but this time she doesn't turn soon enough and moments later she's batchow. For some reason it's hilarious to me, I laugh just thinking about it. This was also done in Huntsman's media experimentation class. And no, Ray, those are old-fashioned riding pants NOT giant hips.

This is from a doodle based on a little dangly ninja keychain Karrah (my best friend) gave me from China.

Sandwiches

Apparently I have problems with sandwiches.
Time is short when you are working on a BFA project and still have other demanding teachers that think you should actually do your homework for their class too. So I don't sleep much. It makes me sad since sleeping is one of my favorite things but some things must be sacrificed.
So after about 3hrs of sleep I hit the snooze as many times as possible before my 8am class and so I had to eat breakfast from a vending machine. The first thing that I notice is that the cold refrigerated sandwich is labeled "Hot and Ready". Hmm...already I was having misgivings. I peek under the wrapper and discover that it's a sausage egg and cheese biscuit thing. Sausage and I don't get along. Still I heat it up and take the thing upstairs to class where I fully unwrap it and then sit down and stare. My inner dialog goes something like this:
"I'm hungry I better eat it."
I reach out to pick it up and then hold it in front of my face while I say in my head:
"I have a bad feeling about this.
Yeah, me too.".....

Here's the final painting. It was gouache and ink and then digital on the top. I have some stuff to fix on it, like reflected light and fixing the line in some of the clouds and on her. I will post the finished painting when it's done!
The final painting is above, I think it still needs work in the dark areas.

Pioneers

We got the assignment to illustrate "Pioneers" it had to be historically accurate. This was a color study for that assignment. Our assignment changed to painting self-portraits but I might finish this someday. I'm sure sometime somewhere during the drive across the plains something like this happened. I have a suspicion they weren't somber and serious all the time. I have an inkling that they actually laughed and had fun sometimes.

Okay, so some people don't believe ADD is a real thing, you're just blaming something for your problems...you don't need pills...just deal with it...etc. etc. Here is an example of what I'm like when my pills wear off.
The Sandwich:
Inner dialogue and action taking a little less than 5 minutes:
Where's the lettuce? where's the lettuce...can't find the lettuce...did my sister eat all that lettuce? How could someone eat that much lettuce? Guess I'll use the iceberg...too bad I liked the greenleaf better...tomato...mustard...mayo...bread. Put it on the counter...oh there's the greenleaf, it was in my hand the whole time...somethings missing? What is missing? The meat is missing. Turn around open fridge, open the meat drawer, what was I looking in here for? Close the meat drawer, look around, pomegranate juice...I've never had that before, that would be good with a sandwich, close the fridge put the juice on the counter. I better make my sandwich, something's missing? What is missing? Meat! I forgot the meat, turn around grab the pastrami and the pickles. Make the sandwich. Kretschmar Braunschwieger...braunschweiger? We didn't buy sliced braunschweiger, it was in a package. I ordered pastrami, isn't this pastrami? It looks like pastrami, smells like pastrami. It's cheaper than pastrami, pastrami is $6.99 a pound and I got a half pound, this says $3.99 a pound. Next time I go to the store I should tell them I owe them for pastrami, what should I say if they want to know who sliced it for me? She was nice I don't want to get her in trouble, should I lie and say I don't know, should I say "some girl I don't know"? What would they do? Fire her? Will I go to hell for not checking the bag before I checked out? Is it a sin to not say anything? Was the girl testing me to see if I was honest? I didn't even look at the bag and just threw them in the cart. I spent too much on meat I should have bought more vegetables...Focus Casey Focus! I need to cut the tomatos. Make your sandwich! Cut the tomatos, where's the cutting board? I don't know...cut my fingers but not too deep, it's okay. Assemble sandwich cut in half. Put everything away, pour some pomegranate juice and sit at my desk. Where's my sandwich?

The Blues

My little twist on the Aesop Fable "The Fox and the Crow". All the little fox wanted was the fur and the jewels...now the crow will be singing "The Blues". Remember Aesop's moral, "Don't trust flatterers." Or something like that.
I still have things to fix, the background is a little loose, but it's almost there. All comments are welcome!

Of course the first thought I had was "Remember remember the fifth of November" but I'm sure everyone thought of that one, so I didn't draw V no matter how much I wanted to. ANYWAY! I'm home for the summer and thank heavens Franson introduced the class to Illustration Friday or I'd be in my bedroom snipping my split ends all summer. Charlie understood that costumes and gimics were necessary in his line of work. He got used to the idea of playing a female. He was used to the bow, the dress made him feel pretty, but he just could not understand why he had to wear a chicken on his head.
This is my piece for wired. I am going to noodle on it some more so it may change. I rely on line so much I thought I'd try just painting...I think it's lacking something.

Gravity

Once again, Chuckles fails to grasp the gravity of the situation.
I was trying to be original but a classmate told me he saw something similar when he googled gravity. I was quite sad. I don't think it was a clown though, just the different use of the word gravity. Oh well. Also! I am afraid of clowns, a fear I thank Stephen King, Tim Curry and the movie Poltergeist for. This was an experiment for me to draw a clown that is not frightening...I present the only clown that doesn't creep me out. Also (sorry this is really long) this is a scratchboard technique Scott Franson assigned us for this Illustration Friday word. I only had 2.5 hours of sleep last night so I did the assignment, saved it as a jpg and then chucked all the painting I did. So now all I have is a 72 res. jpg of this.and I need to print it out for class tomorrow. Poor me. Cheer me up Chuckles.

Well, the narcoleptic burgler strikes again...and he picked a horrible time to crash. What will he tell his fellow inmates? This is our latest assignment. We were supposed to use texture and I just stuck to one. I really like it but it makes it look like he broke into a dump with peeling wallpaper.
